Your father hires a hitman to kill you, someone close to you laces your dinner with poison, and then your family is kidnapped and held captive for more than two years. All this transpired because you left your family’s religion to follow Jesus.
This is a true story. This brother in Christ is one of our missionaries whom we call Abbaad.
Abbaad has faced tremendous persecution, not by the government but by his family. He is the only believer on his side of the family as his wife is on hers. Yet, through tremendous persecution, they remain steadfast for God and His Kingdom rather than retreat in fear in search of safety and comfort.
They are whom the Christian community commonly refer to as a Muslim Background Believer or MBB for short. In essence, they grew up following the ways of Islam until Jesus revealed Himself to them and changed their lives for eternity.
With the odds stacked against them, they are committed to making Christ known within Muslim communities. This is not a simple passion they acquired on an emotional high at an overpriced Christian conference. Their passion and determination was acquired through the power of God’s Word, the working of the Holy Spirit in their lives and through the pain they experienced being rejected by family while embraced by Christ.
Abbaad’s story is powerful, not because of the persecution but because of the resulting love he has for those who persecuted him in the past and now those in the present. Christ is so precious and valuable to Abbaad that he is able to look at his persecutors with a tremendous amount of mercy, grace and love.
When someone around him is hungry, his persecutors included, he seeks to feed them. When they are thirsty, he brings them water or a cup of tea. When they are hurting or lacking, he goes the distance to find a solution that will help them. This is the power of the Gospel at work. This is what happens when someone is transformed by the power of God. They are able to forgive and love those who seek to do them harm. There is no love quite like the love of Christ in our lives.
You and I may not have the same testimony. We may not have ever experienced persecution or rejection for following Jesus. Yet, there is something we can all relate to.
We all have people in our lives that we can easily be angry at, hate or seek revenge against. Yet, Jesus is calling us to a higher standard. He is calling us to love and forgive our enemies. He is calling us to take the Gospel to all peoples in all places regardless of their nationality, color, religion or whether it is safe to do so.
May God use Abbaad’s life to challenge and influence our lives toward a deeper walk with Christ, a walk that will empower us to follow Christ anywhere at any time no matter the cost.
